All players used their own golf balls. Half the team started playing 9 balls from 30 m, then 9 balls from 60 m and finally 9 balls from 90 m toward a pin on a practice green. The other team started to hit one ball toward the pin from 90 m, then walked closer and hit one ball from 60 m, then finally hit one ball from 30 m on each green. This was done over 9 holes. The teams then changed environment. The distance from the holes after the shots were noted.

The figure shows one players nine balls from 30m between the two different situations.

S=Side miss in meters, - is left and + is right

D=Distance miss, - is short and + is long

Absolute means signs are disregarded when summing them together

PEI%=Percent Error Index %, i.e. the distance to the target divided with distance from the target x 100.

The intention was to increase the focus during training, as all shots counts, and to have individual data to discuss training with. Calibration of external cameras now uses a live, streaming video feed as well. Video settings and calibration of camera functions have been moved under the camera icon shown in the top, middle of the TPS software.

Webcam support
The quality of USB webcams has improved recently. Cameras such as Microsoft’s LifeCam Studio (www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-us/webcamst) offer very good picture quality both indoors and outdoors at an affordable price.

NOTE: USB webcams consume 50% of the USB bandwidth. If you want to record from multiple webcams simultaneously (the internal TrackMan camera counts as a webcam) you need to add an extra USB hub to your computer by a PC/Express card or similar (approximately 25 USD).

Short Game application (TrackMan III only)
A new Short Game mode is available for TrackMan III owners. The new hardware allows for the measurement of shots down to 2 m/yds. The Short Game application works both indoors and outdoors and includes all ball flight parameters (excluding spin axis). To measure the spin rate indoors the ball should be marked.

Ball Position overlay graphic
A new ‘Ball Position’ graphic has been added to the options available under 3D in the video window. This new graphic is available on down-the-line camera angles taken from the internal TrackMan camera and/or external cameras connected to your computer. The ‘Ball Position’ graphic helps determine visually where impact was made on the club face.

Geo-tagged data (only TrackMan III)
Using the built-in GPS in the TrackMan III radars, every shot hit on TrackMan is now tagged with latitude, longitude, and altitude information. If you have an active internet connection, clicking the hyperlink in the ‘Shot List’ takes you directly to GoogleMaps™ showing a real image of where the shots were hit.

.

Finally PhD

<dc:subject>Home</dc:subject>

I am happy to say that i finally reached one of my long term goals, finishing my doctoral studies. In Sweden, there is a tradition to use a hammer and a nail to publish the printed version of the doctoral thesis. This means that the thesis is up for public scrutiny until it is defended. The dissertation will be 22nd of February 2012 at Örebro university. Welcome!

Research subject
Sports Science

Keywords
Golf, professional, world-class, expert, psychology, physique, technique, game statistics, tournament

Abstract
The competition in elite golf is fierce. Players therefore often have psychological, physical, and technical experts supporting them. The associations between these experts focus areas and how they relate to the playing results are valuable to understand, in order to create more effective training programs. The aim of this thesis is therefore to investigate the relationships between physique, technique, and playing results in golf, and to integrate these findings with psychological research on elite golfers.
Two review studies (A and B) and three empirical studies (I, II, and III) are included. Study A and B provide a theoretical foundation where the relationship of psychological, physiological, and technical variables to playing results is reviewed. The empirical studies (Study I, II, and III) were selected based on the findings in the reviews and the applied needs.
Study I shows that some stability test results are strongly correlated to swing technique. Study II found that strength tests as measured in absolute strength or power are strongly correlated to clubhead speed for elite players, but relative strength (percentage of body mass) is not. Study III used PGA Tour ShotLink statistics collected over a year to investigate tee shot accuracy, striking distance, and hole scores. It was found that the ability to hit the ball with high accuracy and a long distance is strongly correlated with low hole scores. Furthermore, the type of fairway miss is relevant to consider as well as striking distance in relation to the distance of the hole.
These results may be used to make gap and needs profiles. Task, personal, and environmental variables should also be considered before giving training advice based on test results. Future studies should further investigate the causality between key areas and playing results, and test the validity of models that may be used to analyze and set goals for elite golfers.

See more information at http://oru.diva-portal.org/smash/record.jsf?pid=diva2:483903

Tribute to Seve

<dc:subject>Home</dc:subject>

One of my major inspirations when starting with golf was Seve Ballesteros, who passed away 2011. I later wrote a chapter about the D-plane in the Swedish Golf Federation educational literature ”Toward lower Scores” 2006, and published a scientific article containing research about the ball flight and impact and more (Competitive Elite Golf: A Review of the Relationships between Playing Results, Technique and Physique, 2009).

This knowledge has taken far too long time to be accepted in the golf community. I believe TrackMan has helped the coaches and players greatly by measuring impact and ball flight and educating in this, for golfers, important topic. When I gave feedback on their tests, the TrackMan staff suggested that I should also send in a paper for their blog.

I then thought I should write about the next step after measuring and analyzing the ball flight and club delivery data - how to link clubhead to possible swing actions. I therefore wrote the paper B-plane and the three axis of rotation which shows the link between the clubface and the butt end of the club. When coaches fully understand where the butt should move in order to control the clubface, we can also give more objective feedback to the players.

Camp Sweden summary

<dc:subject>Home</dc:subject>

We have had a really exciting week in Orlando, Florida.
